ost creatures are not monogamous by nature. It is either something that one chooses, or has it forced upon them. That is not a judgement one way or another, that is just a simple statement of fact.
For myself, I have always chosen to be monogamous because I am extremely selective in the first place, be they considered consort, paramour or husband. For the many years that I have lived, I have had my share of lovers, to be sure. But when I decide to be with someone, truly with them, and especially when there are oaths involved, I am with that person alone. Though temptation inevitably will present itself, I will never betray that bond for the time once the commitment has been made. Only the weakest of beings would fall away from such commitments.
Time and temperament, Fate and I ultimately decide who, how, when or how long I share my bed and my life with anyone. Within that there must be a certain level of trust or it is all for naught. Without that there is little point in the idea of monogamy in the first place. It is the trust that is the hardest thing of all to render to begin with. Never should it be given because of passion alone. There must be something much deeper that is there in order to get anyone to believe in the very idea of such deep and lasting commitments.

Monogamy is for the poor.
*Fanny stares, then shakes her head with a laugh*
Aye, that it is.
I find that many people are perfectly happy being monogamous until someone points it out to them.
I fully admit to being mostly monogamous. I am, however, very selective to begin with.
And what of you, Jareth? I know you hate the word, hate the very idea of mongamy (sounds rather like the word ‘monotony’ doesn’t it?) – but you don’t strike me as someone who is very…..flippant with regard to intimacy.
Being selective is a virtue, definitely.
But truth be told, I place monogamy further lower than equality, which I consider far more important in a relationship.
I would wholeheartedly agree with that.
Would? Instead of do?
*raised eyebrow and a smirk*
Alright then. I DO agree with you wholeheartedly.
Just don’t you go making assumptions based on the fact that I did not choose the word you expected, Jareth. I keep my own counsel, I know my own mind. You of all people should know that.
Ah, but the word that someone chooses to use has meaning beyond the word and into the choice. Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar, but sometimes it can be more.
I think it is safe to assume that humans were not meant to be monogamous. It undoubtedly takes a person of great strength and commitment to practice the condition. I raise my glass to anyone who can.
It can be .. very complicated.
Aye, that it can. The heart goes where it wills. Sometimes it does so in the face of numerous other factors that make it impossible to navigate with ease.
I have never seen a sea that is entirely tamed. If you choose to ignore your heart … you might as well be betraying yourself and that, in my opinion, is far worse.
Love can certainly change people’s views on this, one way or the other. I don’t know what else to say since I’m pretty wiped out from my own answer.
