What does Karma mean to you?

“Those who seek to achieve things should show no mercy.”– Kautilya, Indian Philosopher, 3rd Century B.C.

I spent several years in India among the people of that country. I am well acquainted with the concept of karma and dharma. What is more important, I am familiar with it from the point of view of the culture of where they originated. Though I find that much of the Vedic texts have value, and the land, its people and culture are filled with treasures beyond our wildest imaginings, I find, however, for those outside of the belief system of Sanatana Dharma – or as it is called in the West, Hinduism, that the concept of karma becomes too often used as an excuse.

That is never more true than those who fancy themselves to be Witches….

India to Protect Its Ethnobotanical Heritage

This is a topic that is very near and dear to my heart. I have been studying Ayurveda for a few years now, and have done so because I am a very firm believer in it’s value to the world at large. The Vedic scholars of India made these contributions to the world thousands of years ago, and it is arguably the oldest form of indigenous healing on the planet. Certainly it is one of the most well documented and complex modalities in existence.

Behind the cut is an article from the Wall Street Journal. Dow Jones / Wall Street Journal is a client of mine, so I feel ok reprinting it here. All credit has been cited. At any rate, this is an issue of ever increasing importance. As Indigenous knowledge and remedies gain popularity and more marketshare, corporations, the pharmaceutical industry in particular, is trying to ‘patent’ these things that have been around for millenia. They then try to pawn them off as “inovation”, while turning around and charging the very people that they took these things from for the “privelege” of using what was their heritage to begin with. This is what has been termed ‘ biopiracy’. Please read the article, It’s pretty fascinating.

Write a Letter to Yourself as a Child

Dear Faelyn:

You do not know it now, but you will lead an extraordinary life. The woman whom you know as your foster mother, Morgienne, is no friend to you. I cannot tell you more than this, except be on your guard against her. Remember who you are, remember well the lessons of power, learn them well. Commit them to memory. Be the perfect courtier. Never outshine your superiors, learn to control your emotions, and assure always that your company is the source of pleasure. People will flock to this quality like moths to a flame, and confidences and privy secrets laid at your feet to make use of at a later time. You will need all of these things at your disposal.

You have not known love, yet, but you will. You will be loved by more than one man in your life, but you yourself will find true love with one only. This will take a very long time. When you find him at last, you will know. He will be all that you ever have been told that love is, and more. Be certain that he will give you his soul before he gives you his heart. Trust me on this. Never doubt it for an instant.

You will have children of your own someday. One shall be the issue of the loins of a King, while the others, conceived of love. The first taken from your breast after only four days, the others – well the others, you will find out soon enough.

Stay proud, and always remember who and what you are.

Sincerely,

Your Adult Self

Theatrical Muse – Fog – Photo Prompt

The rising sun barely gave form to the shadows that swam in the fog. I stood on the shore and stared off at the Fortunate Island, my home – my island. The channel would be one of two approaches. Surely from one of the turrets that just showed their shadowy outlines in the mist, Prince Itet was aware of our boats on the opposite shore. What he was not aware of was the Seelie ships that lay out to sea, close enough but well within striking range of the shore.

I could feel Nuada standing behind me, but I did not turn. He remained quiet for long moments just behind me, the wind coming off the channel blew my hair around my face and caused a gull to wheel above our heads against it’s cold blast. Still, I could feel Nuada’s warmth at my back.

“You could solve this now, Faelyn, “he said softly, “agree to be my queen and we could re-take the Island with no shedding of blood. Even Itet’s claim would not stand before that.“

“No,” I said, not turning, my voice was icy even to my own ears, “I will not have the court accuse that I only married you to regain what is already mine. It would be too tempting for most to resist, and certainly would be so for Itet.”

I could not tell him that I had made up my mind that I would never deign to be any man’s wife, whether he be a king or commoner. A Queen that rules alone and by her own right is a force to be reckoned with, but one that is merely consort to a king; she is worth little more than a broodmare in a stable.

Nuada laid a hand on my shoulder, “Your way, then. We launch within the hour. “
