Typical Day

For the challenge at

“What would be a typical day for you?”

A typical day for me would be awakening before dawn, e’vn though I most likely have been up late the night before. This is especially true if there has been a Sabbat or Esbat. A Wytch’s work is never done. There are always things to be done in the wood where I live, herbs to gather, potions and philtres to prepare, and of course, spells to cast. All of this fills my day. Really, what is a Wytch other than a woman who does things that other women cannot or will not do. My day is much like any other woman’s. Cleaning, cooking, gardening and the like. The only difference is, that the whole of the village seems to seek me out, as well as the men upon sailing ships seeking to buy a charm to bring them a lost love, insure the fidelity of a current lover, or perhaps even to find a bit of treasure for themselves on their journeys. For this I am sometimes paid in coin, but more often times than not paid by barter.

How amusing that there are those who would want to barter with a Wytch!

The Herbal Rede

What can kill, can cure.

More in the garden grows
than the Wytch knows.

Sell your coat, and buy betony.

No ear hath heard, no tongue can tell,
the virtue of the pimpernel.

Treoil vervain, St. John’s wort, dill,
hinder Wytches of all their will.

When rosemary grows,
the missus is master.

Faerie-folks,
live within old oaks.

Sow fennel,
sow sorrow.

Only the wicked grow parsley.
Plant your sage and rue together,
the sage will grow in any weather.

Snakes will not go
where geraniums grows.
Where the yarrow grows,
there is one who knows.

If ye would herbal magic make.
be sure the spell is rhyme be spake.

Woe to the lad
without a rowan tree god.

Rowan tree and red thread,
put the Wytches to their speed.

Eat an apple going to bed,
make a doctor beg for his bread.

The fair maid who, the first of May
goes to the fields at break of day,
and washes the dew from the hawhorn tree
will ever after handsome be.

Plant not a cypress vine,
unless it brings death to thine.

Beware the oak, it draws the stroke.
avoid the ash, it courts the flash.
Creep under the thorn,
it will save you from harm.

An apple a day
keeps the doctor away.

Flowers out of season,
sorrows aplenty without reason.

He would live for aye,
must eat sage in May.

One to rot, one to grow,
One for Pigeon and one for the crows.

St. John’s wort and cyclamen
in your bed-chamber keep,
from evil spells and wytcheries,
to guard you in your sleep.

I borage
give courage.

No mistletoe,
no luck.

Be silent as the sacred oak.

What would constitute a “perfect” evening for you?

Borrowed from . No, I am not a member, but I have been talking to others about the possibility of joining. The exercises that are posted are very interesting and they give very good insights into the character that one writes.

A perfect evening for me is on the night of the New Moon. This is the time to set about increase, to bring about the beginnings of Power, to set into motion the spark of life, seed to soil, sword to grail, flesh to flesh, flesh to bone. The dim light of the candles in the Circle are all that are between myself and the darkness that surrounds me. I am not impeded by clothing nor cloak. I remember this clearing in the woods, and difficult it is to negotiate the path at night when there is no moon and the light of the lantern is only to reflect back into your own face – and that of Sister Owl, Brother Coyote and the strong watchful presence of the trees that surround. Aye, the perfect night for me is New Moon, and there will be nothing to stop me from going to the stone Circle, working the spell and giving praise to the Dark Mother.
