TM #246 -What are the five steps to a successful negotiation?

1. Know when to speak and when to hold your silence. – Everyone wishes to be heard, especially in the midst of confrontation and the careful negotiations surrounding a conflict. When you are in the role of a diplomat, it is best to say less than necessary. So many statesmen seem to get a thrill listening to the sound of their own voices without the slightest notion that the more they say the more common they appear. And the more that they say, the more foolish they appear. When this happens, any hope to manoeuvre the situation, let alone control it, is lost. It is a far more dangerous thing during negotiations to say foolish things than to actually do them. Silence and the appearance of interest often renders the other side unable to read you and to judge your intentions. Humans especially like to have a clear notion of where you stand on any given issue. When you can control exactly what you wish them to know and nothing more. Silence is mysterious and so many cannot stand the suspense of that mystery.

TM – Black & White

There is no such thing as black and white in the Realms of Magic. In fact, suffice it to say that in the Seven Realms of Existence, such polarities are such ridiculous constructs cobbled together by the dogmatic, the fearful and the overall unimaginative minions – usually at the behest of their betters. Such things are a way and means by which to control the masses. And the first step in avoiding such traps of mind and spirit is being aware of their existence. All magic is in fact varying shades of gray. The use of Magic, the endeavor of the Great Work, is really at the discretion of the one who wields the tool. Whether we choose to admit to it or not, the ability to make use of these things is as much a part of Life as anything else. Everything we do is a matter of intention. Whatever is a magical act, the only thing that changes it from “white” to “black”, positive or negative, good or ill, is the intent of the user. Nothing more…and certainly nothing less.

There are so-called Light and Dark Sidhe. Some base these comparisons on our physical appearance, or the realms that we inhabit. There are those who determine that the Seelie are to be considered the “Light” or ‘White” Fae and the Unseelie to be the “Dark” or “Black” Fae. Such considerations are bandied about as if somehow you can tell on sight those who would do you ill or grant you boon based on appearances alone. The oleander flower is breathtakingly beautiful – and white, and yet within it is harbored the most deadly of poisons. I have seen such Seelie cruelties that it would even take a hardened Unseelie assassin aback. Using such distinctions to connote that one side is better than the other, or that their intentions are fare more wholesome when held next to the other’s is the mark of the spiritually and experientially immature. All of us in our way and in our time could be accused of lighter or darker intentions or things that motivated the ends. But that would only further muddy the waters.

Sometimes one has to do a particularly black deed or deeds in order to preserve the overall balance of things.

Write about something you lost.

Why? So that that the knowledge of such might be used against me? What loss would you like me to speak of? The loss of my mother? I was four and I am barely able to remember her face now. I was told by my Uncle Angus, that I resembled her greatly. Do you wish to hear about the loss of my virginity? It was part of a ritual, my Initiation. I’ve already spoken of that. The loss of my firstborn daughter? I gave her up to save both of our lives. These were not losses. Things like these are merely life’s challenges and inconveniences that test our mettle and shape us into who we are.

Perhaps the most incredible loss to me was the loss of my husband, Sebastien. He was more than my spouse. He started out as an enemy, evolved into a friend and later became the love of my life. His death marked a beginning for me. It was the beginning of a four hundred year long obsession to find a way to cheat death. There are those who have asked if my singular focus on this one man was a bit too devoted. While it is true that I lost my husband, my lover, and yes, he was the truest friend and ally I could have ever had, what they do not realize is that we were wed by the soul, he and I. From this rite, particularly for the Fae, there is no return. I would have waited lifetimes for him to reincarnate, but somehow, that was not enough. I could not, would not wait for what that entailed. I wanted my Sebastien. I wanted him as the arrogant, aristocratic, ruthless, one-eyed bastard that I had married and no other.

Without him I had lost my perspective and my temperance. More often times than not, I had lost my patience with the world at large and showed it no mercy until it at last gave up what it was that I wanted. In the end it did, but not before I had lost a good deal more in the process.

TM Prompt #179 Empire

“What most people don’t seem to realize is that there is just as much money to be made out of the wreckage of a civilization as from the upbuilding of one… There’s good money in empire building. But, there’s more in empire wrecking.”Rhett Butler, ‘Gone With The Wind’ (Margaret Mitchell).

It is clear that Mr. Rhett Butler obviously understands the Laws of Power. Empires rise and Empires fall. People tend to be most generally complacent and stupid. They hate change. They resist it; never realizing that the very fabric of Life itself is always about change. Without it, like it or not, things stagnate, whither and die. But most do not pay attention to the cycles of change and even from this can be found profit and a way to not only survive, but to thrive. My own life has been long, I have seen and assisted in any number of literal empires in their rise and fall. And I have, from the inevitable rising and falling, profited from it.

Much has been written about how to wage war, how to build an empire or to preserve it or to strike one down. I have done both. Those who would build empires or tear them down forget one thing. They forget the rules of engagement with the opposition. Dreams of glory through full frontal assault make ordinary men (or women) into pocket potentates. And yet, not every war has been won with such blatant assault.

In this game that is Life, we all mean to win. None of us enter it setting out or even expecting to lose. But in order to win, you must realize that for most, the intellect loses to emotion. Groups think emotionally. The members of any given group will only change their course if something directly affecting them and their lifestyle is at stake. If they have something to lose, or if rather greed sets in because of a fear of lack. If you manipulate a situation just so, they will behave in a manner that cuts along the lines of instinct and therefore they will do as you wish them to. And they will do so simply because they cannot help themselves. And if you are the calm in the storm, more often times than not they will do whatever you ask. Thus, the tides of Power shift and you can be there to reap the rewards.
